Celebrating Family Traditions That Stick With Us

There’s a sweet simplicity and joy in returning to traditions over and over again that I delight in. For years creating, a beautifully set table at family gatherings has been a tradition I look forward to. Growing up family get-togethers at our grandparents’ farm in Northern Minnesota were much anticipated. Living so far away from family made me cling to our traditions even more.
Of all the memories I love to recount, most of them took place on those 80 acres. Childhood adventures through the woods, on and off the trails, picking wild blueberries in the summers and tapping Maple trees in the winters to collect for homemade maple syrup. It was a magical place with its tall trees, moss and marsh, fallen trees with massive roots, fairy-like bunches of mushrooms, pine cones, and acorns to be gathered up like treasures.
The farmhouse my grandma grew up in with its log addition my Papa built himself, together with his brothers, was a gathering place filled with love, warmth, and the earthy smell of a wood burning furnace. My favorite tradition was one we fell into. Setting the tables seemed like a fitting job for us girl cousins. So much so that it became our tradition. No matter the holiday or time of year, we loved creating fancy place settings with Grandma’s pretty tablecloths, napkins, and dishware! She let us have full reign to use all our creativity. My favorite part of setting the table was a fancy napkin fold. The cherry on top to an elegant table.
A classic fan fold comes back to memory quickly as I turn the napkin back and forth. A fold my cousin and I perfected over the years for many a family meal. While we return to our traditions, filled with wonderful memories of the times before, we also experience them again in fresh ways. This is one family tradition I plan to keep. As we grow up and get married and start having families of our own, it’s fun to think of passing our traditions along.
Family gatherings were busy, full of conversation, laughter, and all sorts of cousin shenanigans. And don’t be surprised if there were a few messes in there as well. Throughout the years I love to embrace our traditions, pass them on, and start new ones! Setting the table by fancy folding napkins is one simple way I celebrate traditions and family.
