What Is a Media Kit + How to Create a Media Kit [2023]
Whether you’ve been blogging for a long time or even if you are just getting started a media kit is an essential tool every blogger needs! If you are wondering what is a media kit and how to create one, I’m answering all your questions in this post. From what exactly a media kit is, why you must have one and how to create it I’m covering all the bases.
If you are looking to work with brands a media kit serves as a significant component of landing a collaboration. When it comes to monetizing your blog or social media you’ll find that a media kit comes in very handy. Having a beautifully designed and well thought out media kit helps you stand out from the crowd and represent yourself professionally to brands.
What is a Media Kit
When it comes to working with brands having a media kit is essential. Similar to a press kit, a media kit serves as a way to present yourself to brands in a professional manner. If you want to be taken seriously by brands a media kit is a must.
Think of your media kit as your blogger resume.
Your media kit not only introduces you to a brand, it lets them see who you are, what your blog is about and why they should work with you.
You may be wondering if you really need a media kit.
The answer is yes!
A media kit serves as a great snap shot of who you are and what you can offer as a blogger or influencer. More than just a business card it serves as a portfolio communicating important information regarding your stats, demographics, services and rates.
With a media kit a blogger can share all the key pieces a brand is looking for and communicate why you are a good fit to collaborate together.

What should a media kit include
But just what do you put in your media kit?
You’ll want to introduce yourself and your blog, share your best statistics on followers and engagement, give a sampling of your most popular posts or previous collaborations and communicate partnership opportunities or services and rates.
Even if you are just starting out blogging, a media kit is an important tool to network and showcase yourself as a professional.
It’s common for brands to request a media kit, so having one ready to go will keep you from scrambling last minute to put one together.
media kit profile photo
Start with a great profile photo of yourself! For example, I recommend a well lit photo of yourself, over a casual shot you just snapped. Your photo should be representative of you and let your personality shine through, but still professional enough to be taken seriously. Not only does a profile photo give the brand a face to go with your name it gives them a personal connection to you.
Media kit About Me Bio
A great bio introduces who you are, what you are passionate about, your main goal behind your personal brand, how you accomplish that goal and who you serve.
Let brands and collaborators know who you are in your about section. Share about yourself and your blog to let them know what a great fit you would be to work with them. If you are struggling to get started you can even grab info from your about me page on your blog or Instagram bio.
What if I don’t have a blog?
Media kits are essential for working with brands. If you aren’t a blogger a media kit is still useful for content creators, photographers, social media influencers, podcasters, entrepreneurs and really anyone collaborating or partnering with a brand.
Check out the example bio below:
This short synopsis is the perfect moment to connect with a brand. Share a few things you are passionate about. Highlight the pillar content you regularly write and share about.
You can even customize your media kit slightly depending on the brand you are sending it to.
Be unapologetically, authentically you! Working with brands is about finding the right fit, for both of you. When you clearly communicate who you are and the unique gifts you bring to the table, partnerships will blossom. Take the time to think through your messaging so the true you shines through.
Media Kit Social Media and Blog Statistics
Share your top platform and statistics in this section. This gives brands an idea of what to expect when they collaborate with you. While this is not the only factor in determining a partnership, brands need an honest idea of your social and blog reach.
Key social numbers to share are followers and engagement rates. Key blog numbers to share are your monthly views, unique monthly visits, returning visitors and email list subscribers.
Keep in mind, you don’t have to share every social media platform you are on, just your top ones or the ones relevant to the brand you are reaching out to.
If you have a low follower count on an essential platform share statistics that show growth percentages or engagement rates instead. For example if you have 2k Pinterest followers, but have 50k monthly views, you’ll want to share the views as it is the more valuable metric for that platform.
Numbers aren’t everything and when you are just starting out low numbers don’t mean a brand won’t work with you, but it’s still important to share them so that realistic expectations are set.
Media Kit Audience Demographics
Including audience demographics can give a brand insight into who your posts and blog reaches. Common information to share is gender, age range, marital status, parental status and country.
For example if you have a 75% female following and 86% of them have kids, that tells a baby clothing company you are a great fit! However let’s say 92% of them were single without kids, then your audience isn’t a good fit for baby clothing, but would be a great fit for a dating app.
Use your audience demographics insights to help you figure out brands that would be good to pitch to as well. Clearly sharing key audience insights means finding collaborations that are meaningful for both you and the brand.
Media Kit Collaborations, Services & Rates
What can you offer a brand? Sponsored social media posts or blog posts, advertising space on your blog, a shoutout in your stories, linking to a product in an email… List all the available partnerships and collaboration offerings you provide in this section.
collaboration ideas to offer in your media kit:
- Sponsored post on social media or blog
- Review of a product
- Brand shoutout on social media
- Advertising space on your blog
- Giveaways
What services do you offer?
Likewise list any services you offer that are different than your collaboration offerings. For example do you offer content creation like writing a blog post for a brand’s site or taking photos for brands to use?
should you List your rates in your Media Kit
Some blogger choose to list their rates up front, while others ask brands for their budgets first and then negotiate. You’ll need to determine if you want to communicate collaboration rates up front or not. Either way determining your rates in advance means you are prepared for that conversation when the time comes.
When offering services I recommend having your rates listed as they differ slightly from brand partnerships.
If you are looking for more insight on how to set your rates, Chas of Through the Lyns, has an amazing guide on setting rates as an influencer! Chas helped me see setting my rates in a whole new light to make sure I wasn’t leaving any money on the table when it comes to working with brands.
Your media kit portfolio
From highlighting popular posts, sharing examples of previous brand collaborations or testimonials, the portfolio section of your media kit shows off your work. You can include all or just one of these ideas. If you are just starting off and don’t have a lot of brand work to show you can highlight your favorite blog posts or Instagram posts. This section gives brands a feel for you aesthetic and style so they know what to expect when you create content for them.
Highlight Popular Posts in your Media Kit
Let your most popular posts shine in this section. Showcasing your most popular posts in a portfolio section of your media kit gives the brand a feel for your aesthetic and the type of content you can create for them.
When you are first starting out you may not have collaborations to share in your media kit. Instead share your most popular posts. By giving examples of posts from your blog or Instagram the brand can get a feel for your work and what you can create for them.
You can also create a list of brands you’ve worked with. Share your favorite paid collaborations and the brands you’ve previously worked with in this section. Highlight your best collaborations here. What brands have you worked for, photos of collaborations and stand out information that made these partnerships successful.
Provide Testimonials in your Media Kit
Have great feedback from brands or clients you’ve worked with? Share it below your collaborations or popular posts section!
Include Contact Info in your Media Kit
Don’t forget to provide the best ways to get in contact with you!
Can you imagine sending a brand your beautifully crafted media kit, only to forget to include how they can contact you? Believe it or not it happens.
Include your email, social handles and website. You could even include your phone number, as long as you aren’t posting your media kit publicly.
I also recommend hyperlinking your contact info and social media profiles in your media kit so that all the brand has to do is click on it to be taken to the link.
A media kit is a fantastic way for bloggers to introduce themselves to brands. Now that you know everything you need to include in yours, you can get to crafting the perfect kit!
