How to Spark and Rediscover Your Creativity

How to Spark and Rediscover Your Creativity

Creativity fires me up and fills me with passion. Anxiety drains the life right out of me. How much more wonderful to use our imaginations for beautiful thoughts. Creativity is such a gift. We all have our own unique creative imaginations. Everyone is creative. For some of us creativity is expressed through art, music, writing, crafting, how we decorate our homes or style our outfits.

Creativity is not cookie cutter. For others creativity is in taking a photograph, planting a garden, cooking or baking or arranging a bouquet of flowers. Some express it boldly, others in subtly and others somewhere in the middle of those two. I do believe in each of us is a spark of creativity waiting to be expressed. Read on for how to spark and rediscover you creativity!

How to Spark and Rediscover Your Creativity

Spark your creativity

We all find ourselves facing creative burnout. To get that creative drive back I play! I pull out a bunch of trinkets and things that inspire me and take pictures. I gather up succulent clippings and throw an arrangement together. I set my table for the pure fun of it. I go on a nature walk and collect flowers and pine cones. The point is creativity also comes when your in the midst of it. Instead of waiting for it to strike sometimes you have to dive in and let it find you. Here’s five ideas on how to spark and rediscover your creativity!

1. Take Time to Play

Creative expression is doing something because it brings you joy. Do it without expectations. Do it without having something to show for it or for results. Do it without having to capture the moment or for the sake of productivity or accomplishment.

I play by going to the ocean, dipping my feet in the sand and collecting shells and sea glass. I play by propagating succulents, picking flowers and making floral arrangements. I play by going on a nature walk and taking pictures of tree lined avenues, fences bursting with blossoms, and little lambs frolicking in their pens.

Do something you enjoy. Do something that makes you laugh. Do something that lets you let loose. Experiment and see what happens.

2. Be in Nature

Nature is one of my greatest sources of inspiration. I don’t have to look for it or seek it out. When I’m outside inspiration finds me. Find a place or places outside that allow you to relax. I’m the most at ease and peace when I go to the beach. When I’m facing burnout of any kind I always find myself renewed by the water.

Take a walk, hike, run, go for a swim or a bike ride. Go it alone or grab a friend for company and conversation.

3. Have a conversation

I think of new creative ideas in conversation all the time. Conversation sparks the imagination. It also draws us out of the box of our own thoughts. The introduction of someone else’s thought process, perspectives, and opinions may trigger in us a fresh response. Conversation fills my up and lifts me up. In conversation I am encouraged, challenges, I laugh, I ponder, I listen, I am heard and I am blessed by the deepening of the relationship.

4. Spend time with like minded creatives

I love getting to spend time with like minded creatives. It inspires and fuels my creative juices. Admire the creativity or others. Get to know other people in your creative field. Photographers, crafters, painters, bakers… Collaborate on a project together. Have creative conversations. Whatever you have a passion for spend time with people who share your passion.

5. Celebrate it

I absolutely love celebrating creativity! It’s such a joy bringer and giver! Go to a museum, art show or exhibit and appreciate the art. Go to a concert and let the music fill you up!

Rediscovering your creativity isn’t always about you creating. Getting filled up and inspired by others expressions can be a spark for your own imagination. Let yourself take it in and enjoy it.

Express your creativity

One of the most amazing photographers of all time, Ansel Adams, created some of the most stunning images I’ve ever seen. The combination of his passion and talented eye produced a beautiful photographic legacy and inspiration to generations to come!

Ansel Adams said “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.”

My creativity is often expressed in the images I make. I look for the right composition, framing, colors, angles, perspective and careful editing once the image has been captured. I enjoy the process of creating a beautiful image.

I express my creativity in my home. I choose art and decor that inspires me. I take the time to set my tables for seasons and Holidays or because it looks pretty. I create vignettes by gathering decor elements together on my counter or a side table. I make succulent arrangements in pots and fill my home with dried greenery and fresh flowers and plants.

I try new projects. I follow someone else’s tutorial, I make variations, or even completely invent my own creation. I go to the thrift store and look for items I can turn into something new or spruce up with a little paint.

Creativity brings me so much joy! I love finding new ways to express it, to appreciate it and to share it. I hope this post has given you some inspiration on how to spark and rediscover your creativity!
