DIY Faux Watercolor Wall Art
31 Days of DIY Projects. Project One: DIY Faux Watercolor Wall Art.
Materials you’ll need: Colored pencils – I used Prismacolor, a pencil, art paper – I used a Mixed Media Vellum Finish for both wet and dry media, and a paint brush and small cup of water.
It’s important that the paper you choose to use is a paper, like mixed media or watercolor paper, that allows for you to use water with it.
Step One: Find inspirational images or take some pictures. I used a picture of a leaf and a picture of a cactus. When sketching it’s really helpful to have an image to reference. You could even use a real object if you have something you want to use!
Step Two: Sketch out your image with a pencil. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Use the images you found or took as inspiration.
Step Three: Color in your art with your colored pencils.
Step Four: Use a paintbrush and water to blend your colors together. Don’t use too much water at a time. Let dry.
Step Five: Add more color with your colored pencils. I really liked blending the colors and adding shading as I went.
Repeat steps four and five as needed until you are happy with the color and blending. You can layer colors over each other or add more color to an area as you go.
I drew the leaf first and then the cactus. I definitely like the blending better on the cactus. The leaf was more of an experiment to figure out if I could blend the colored pencil with a brush to give it that watercolor effect. Once I had the hang of it the cactus was a breeze! I’m very happy with how my DIY Faux Watercolor Wall Art turned out. I’m calling Day One of my 31 Day series a success. Let me know if you make some Wall Art of your own!
