Mini Clay Acorns Cottagecore DIY

It’s Mid-November and it’s been in the 70’s and 80’s around here. I honestly love living in Southern California, but it’s kinda killing my Fall enthusiasm. I mean seriously, I just want to wear boots and flannels and scarves and cozy sweaters! You know what I’m saying?

I had this fun idea to make these awesome Mini Clay Acorns. I spotted some adorable paper acorns on Pinterest the other day and it totally sparked an idea. So I decided to make some clay acorns of my own. I have these sweet vintage buttons that my Grandma gave me several years ago. The wooden ones in particular make really cute acorn tops. I’ve been trying to think of something that I could create from this Air-Dry Clay for a while. This turned out to be the perfect cottagecore clay project to make!

I shaped the clay into little acorn bottoms by hand. I didn’t want to glue the buttons on so I put wire inside the middle of the clay. That way when the clay dried it was formed around the wire. I used baker’s twine and pulled it through the buttonholes to create a loop at the top. These little mini clay acorns make really cute Garland, don’t they?!

Materials needed: Air dry clay, wire, pliers, baker’s twine, vintage or wooden buttons.

 How to make your own Mini Clay Acorns DIY:

Step One: Start with a piece of clay about the diameter of a nickel and roll it into a ball. Begin to gently shape the bottom of the ball into a cone shape.  Continue to gently shape the clay until you are satisfied with your acorn.
Step Two: Creating the loop to hang your acorn from.

For Wooden Buttons: Cut a piece of wire about 1 inch long depending on the size of your acorn. Create a small loop with your wire twisting the ends together.

For all other buttons: Cut a piece of wire approximately 2 inches long. Loop through buttonholes leaving enough space on the top to hang from. Insert the wire into the clay while it is still wet. {skip step three for these buttons}

Step Three: For Wooden Buttons: Pull your baker’s twine through your buttonholes leaving enough space on the top to hang from. Tie baker’s twine to the wire on the bottom side of the button. Insert the wire into the clay while it is still wet. I used baker’s twine with the wooden buttons because it looks much more organic and natural.
Step Four: Let clay dry. Air dry clay takes about three days to fully dry.
Step Five: String mini clay acorns on a string of baker’s twine and hang!

Such a fun, simple, little diy project you can try this week or weekend! These guys are really cute! I love my little string of garland. The mini clay acorns could also be used as a pendant on a necklace or you could use them as ornaments for your tree. They will easily transition from Fall to Christmas!

If you made your own mini clay acorns what would you use them for?

Happy DIYing!
