How to Make Our Favorite Thanksgiving Recipes

Nothing says Thanksgiving or Christmas without my mom’s two famous side dishes, sweet potato bake and green bean casserole. I can’t think of one Thanksgiving where my mom didn’t make these amazing dishes. I am so excited to share them with you today!

These two recipes have been a part of many family gatherings across the country for years. They are perfect to pair with turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and more. The sweet potato bake and green bean casserole bring both sweet and savory flavors to the table. I get a warm feeling inside just talking about Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s my favorite time of the year!

Classic Green Bean Casserole

Ingredients:
  • 1 can (10 1/2 ounces)  Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • A few slices of Velveeta cheese
  • A small pinch of salt and pepper
  • 4 cups cooked cut green beans
  • 1 1/3 cups French Fried Onions (We use French’s)
Instructions:

1. Stir the soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, beans and 2/3 cuponions in a 1 1/2-quart casserole.

2.Bake at 350°F. for 25 minutes or until the bean mixture is hot and bubbling.  Stir the bean mixture.  Sprinkle with the remaining onions.

3. Bake for 5 minutes or until the onions are golden brown.

Sweet Potato Bake:

Ingredients:
  • 3 Large sweet potatoes
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • Salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
Instructions:

1.In large sauce pot, cover sweet potatoes with cold water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and boil until sweet potatoes are tender and easily pierced with a knife (about 30 minutes). Using tongs, remove potatoes from water and set aside to cool. When potatoes are cool enough to handle, peel and mash them in a large bowl.

2. Cut 1 stick of butter into equal pieces and place in the bowl with the warm mashed sweet potatoes. Add sugar, salt, and vanilla extract and mix together well. Whisk eggs and stir until mixture is well-combined and smooth. Stir in milk (1 Tbsp at a time), just until mixture is moist and no longer stiff (you may not use all the milk).

3.
Preheat oven to 350 F  and grease a nonstick pan or dish. Pour sweet potato mixture into baking dish and spread evenly. Melt second stick. In bowl, mix together nuts, flour, and brown sugar. Sprinkle brown sugar mixture completely  over potatoes and drizzle top all over with melted butter.

4
. Bake util topping is browned and crispy and sweet potato mixture is cooked through, 35 to 40 minutes. Serve hot.
