Easy DIY Color Blocking Wooden Bowls

I love the wonderful contrast of the Robin’s Egg Blue and Warm Yellow in these easy DIY color blocking wooden bowls. It’s amazing what a coat or two of paint can do.

For Spring I love using bright, bold pops of color in my home. The moment I found these wooden bowls at the thrift shop I knew they’d be perfect for color blocking. Sustainable living through thrifted home decor is so fun! My biggest tip for picking up items for DIYing is to look past what you see – the bare bones – and imagine what you could turn it into!

My favorite thing to do with bowls is to nestle smaller bowls or dishes inside of them. The shape and size of these bowls are perfect for this project. These bowls are a bit worn down and the finish is wearing off, but that’s fine because I’ve painted over that part of the bowls.

Easy DIY Color Blocking Wooden Bowls:

Step One

Start by wiping down your bowls and taping off the portion you want leave unpainted. I’ve made the mistake of forgetting to dust off my item first before and had funny little lumps and bumps under the paint. Use masking or painter’s tape to avoid stripping the finish off of the wood when you remove it.

When it comes to upcylcing spray paint is my best friend. I really like Valspar’s outdoor spray paint. They have a wonderful color selection and the paint goes on evenly.

Painting hack: I like to spray inside of a box (instead of on newspaper) to keep the mist from the spray from spreading. I find it works really well with smaller objects. Of course not all projects fit in a box, but for this one it worked great!

Step Two

Start spray painting. Follow the instructions on the can and apply your spray paint lightly in layers to avoid dripping or clumping.

Step Three

Let your paint dry. Once the paint has dried check for thin spots and reapply as needed.

Once your paint has dried, remove your tape and enjoy your new color blocked bowls!

Once you have color blocked your bowls have fun nestling potted plants, succulents or smaller dishes inside of them. Or just use them as is for change, small trinkets or jewelry!

Enjoy making your Easy DIY Color Blocking Wooden Bowls!

Happy thrifting and DIYing your home decor!

If you decide you want to use your bowls outside simply coat with a layer of clear finishing spray, like a rust-oleum lacquer, to protect the unpainted wood.
